Brownfield Cleanup and Development

Powerplant Decommissioning
Manhattan, NY: (2003-Present)

After this historic steam plant was taken off-line, Brookside mobilized to the site to provide various remediation services prior to the site being turned over to the new owner. The most complex part of this project involved the excavation of PCB-contaminated soil from a concrete vault twenty feet beneath an active city sidewalk. Two electric-powered, remote controlled Brokk excavators were utilized to excavate the contaminated soil from this confined space. Once this phase was complete and the building was demolished, Brookside was able to focus on the removal of approximately 300 steel foundation pilings.

Two large excavators were utilized to remove the 30 foot long concrete filled sections and load them onto specialized trailers for transport to a recycling facility. Additionally, Brookside excavated, transported, and disposed of approximately 10,000 tons of petroleum contaminated soil and provided heavy equipment for backfilling and grading operations. Currently, Brookside is on site removing several 10 foot diameter cooling water tunnels located 20 feet beneath sea level, requiring around-the-clock dewatering.
